Richard was the guy who set up this list and works hard to organise
meetings etc. for member of the sheflug.
I thought the open source community was different to the average
industry/commercial/computer community, to the extent that one may be
able to enjoy debate about ALL kinds of (computer-related) subjects with
friends within the group. Okay, it is a mailing list for a Linux
Users' Group, but that's exactly what it is; a group of people, not
necessarily all of whom wear proverbial anoraks :-}
We have had discussions on this list about all kinds of issues from
open-source philosophy to wages for Linux devlopers. What have these to
do with Sheffield? Personally I enjoy the chance to discuss these issues
with people who are interested in the same kinds of things.
When you go to a LUG meeting, do you only talk about Linux. If that is
the case, then I'm afraid you're missing out on a lot of other stuff
that being an active member of the community can bring, and probably one
of the main points for the existence of such groups. If it isn't the
case then why should the mailing list be any different?
I thoroughly appreciate Richard's efforts to promote interesting,
topical debate within this list.
Keep it interesting and people will stay...
P.S. I did all that without using a single swear word, manners gentlemen
