If I'm going to buy from that kind of shop I like to have a look at the people
who are running it before I do anything.

I've worked on Gateway and Compaq computers. I find that they have
specially manufactured cards. When it comes round to upgrade time
it's either not possible to get hold of new cards or it's just
impossible to do an upgrade without throwing the whole machine away.
The Compaq machines are even worse. I've seen technicians standing
in front of me with blood dripping from their hands after trying to
get round a convoluted system of boards.

I much prefer to buy IBM (I have built some of their computers for
them). If the components are bought through mail order or a local
shop I generally find that an IBM clone can be very reliable. As
long as I build it myself.
