ManLUG Meeting This Afternoon

Hello

This afternoons ManLUG meeting at Manchester University proved to
be every bit as entertaining as I thought it would be. It's always
well organised and well attended.

Dave Gilbert kicked off with a presentation on Linux on non-Intel
machines. That means Sparc, Macintosh, Amiga, Atari etc. It was
easy to understand his presentation technique leaves no doubt about
what's right or wrong with Linux on non PC machines. Brilliant.

Nils Walet gave the next talk about Beowulf. This is an application
that allows networks of machines to work together. That means that
either 2 or 1000 machines can be used in parallel. It's obvious that
a lot of cpus working together can provide a lot of processing power.
And it's cheap too. Several PCs joined together in this way can
provide very low cost high power computing. One of the things about
Beowulf is that it's an endless subject to be involved with.
Although Nils did his best for us it was (as he explained) very
difficult to fit some basic facts into one hour. He did very well
considering the limitations of the human speech processor (his brain)
and the auditory senses of the assembled audience.

Well worth a trip to Manchester :-) (what beer ?)

Thanks

Richard
