True Type Fonts.

Hi,

I'm new to this group and pretty new to linux and, whilst I have become
a fan on linux, my brain is beginning to ache! I'm trying to sort out
how to enable true-type font support but seem to have come up against
the 'instructions written by an expert' problem and I could do with a
bit of help written in simple English explaining just how to go about
it. I have downloaded Freetype 1.1.1,
xfsft-1_1_6_linux-i386-libc6_tar.gz and ttmkfdir_tar.gz but I'm finding
difficulty in working out just how I need to alter the Makefile's or
whatever to install things on my system and whether or not I then have
to add something in to rc.local to initialise it each time I log on. I'm
running RedHat 5.2 (2_0_36 kernel) with XFree86, KDE 1.1 desktop and
Star Office, Netscape 4.5 etc. on a Pentium 100Mhz machine. If anyone
can offer advice I'd be most grateful.
I became interested in linux via an interest in CNC machining and I'm in
the process of building a small, precision CNC milling machine for use
in my watchmaking, which I will drive using the RT-Linux patch and the
EMC control software being developed by the National Institute of
Science and Technology in the 'States. There is a CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO email
list which discusses the practical aspects of applying linux and other
systems to CNC work but, when you start to ask questions of a more
general nature, they seem to lose interest and become a bit deaf! ;o)

Best wishes

Ian
