To be honest, all this business of downloading tar.gz files is very
nice if you want to alter the source code, but if you're using RH5.2,
chances are that rpm'd versions of those programs exist. I know about xfstt
is available as an rpm. I know it is availabe as a .deb package, so if you
can't find it, I could translate the .deb into an rpm and mail it over. On
the other hand, you don't need to recompile libc6 (this is already installed
by default; it is the common C library). In particular, the debian package
of xsftt does not require any other package (apart from the usual stuff,
libc6 and libstdc++) to run.
Ooops, just realized we're not talking of the same stuff here. You
mention xsfst and I mention xfstt. Nearly the same, but not quite. If I were
you, I'd go for xfstt, which does not need any special requirements.
Apparently, it's easy to compile. Give it a try under
http://web.mit.edu/sarantos/.
Let us know how you're getting on!

That's the beauty of pre-packaged software :)))
