CAD and TT_fonts

Hi Group,

The more I play with linux, the deeper into the mire I seem to get! I
have been trying to find a CAD program I could use with my machine
control stuff (although I would still have a gap between the exporting
of a .dxf file and creating a G-code control file so I'd probably still
have to use a **windows** app.) and I chanced upon VariCAD which seems
absolutely ideal - except that it isn't free! I even found an .rpm for
it and it seemed to install fine - but - when I try to run it I get an
error file reading as follows and nothing starts up:

Cannot open inet.con #(there is no such file on the system although I
did create a file called this and just put a fictitious URL in it and
didn't get this part of the error message again)#

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private
resource denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 89 (X_StoreColors)
Serial number of failed request: 310
Current serial number in output stream: 583

The bit between the #..#'s is just my comment and not part of the error
message. So.. can anyone explain what is going wrong and what the
geek_speak message is trying to tell me. Do I need to re-download all
10Meg of it or just forget it and just stick with Autocad on *windows*?
The only other CAD program I seem to be able to find is FreeDraft and
the installation instructions are so complicated and convoluted that I
can't imagine ever being able to get that to run!

The other problem is that I cannot get True Type fonts to work. I have
istalled Freetype_1.2 which seems to be working, I have copied a load of
True Type fonts into a /tt_fonts/ directory and I have untarred it,
changed the first line of the Makefile to read
FREETYPE_BASE=/usr/temp/freetype-1.2 (which is where my copy of freetype
is) and then done a 'make'. However, when I try to run
./ttmkfdir>fonts.dir I get an error saying:

ttmkfdir: error in loading shared libraries
libttf.so.2: cannot open shared object file : no such file or directory

I don't understand this as libttf.so.2 is sitting in
/usr/temp/freetype-1.2/lib/.libs/libttf.so.2 which the Makefile line -

FREETYPE_LIB=L$(FREETYPE_BASE)/lib/.libs -lttf

seems to be pointing at. What am I missing?

I am working from the 'Adding fonts to Star Office 5.0' instructions and
heading towards getting xfsft installed hopefully.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Ian
