Well, you're running the same distro as me, and it worked for me: this is
a fairly strong indicator that your hardwares a little dodgy; or the
software configuration for the hardware. I can't think I've done anything
to my machine to make it work: my laptop esp. is just running the vanilla
install; I did it for demo day and haven't changed it since.

Sounds more and more like a hardware problem, I'm afraid....
