KDevelop Again!!
Hi Guys...
I just wanted to let you know how I'm getting on with KDevelop. I know a
lot of you don't program, so if you non-programmers just delete this
email straight off I won't be offended!! And perhaps it's time we did
program reviews as well as book reviews on the Sheflug site. . .
I've been using KDevelop recently for some MPEG - related work, mainly
with fourier series and stuff like that, all command line stuff as well,
non of this GUI nonsense ;) I'm using Beta 3, although I'm going to
upgrade tomorrow: beta 4.1 has been out a while, and I notice KDbg has
reached 1.0.0.
I can't get over how easy it is. I'm used to multiple xterms, vi/pico,
gcc, etc., and having stuff all over the desktop. Not great when I move
from my 17 to the university's 14ers. It's fabulous, it's all there, on
screen for me. I imagine it's much like MS Visual Studio, but that is a
highly rated piece of software, so it's not necessarily a bad thing!
It has me doing things I never bothered doing before: up-to-date packages,
autoconf, automake, up-to-date document source trees(!), etc. And all
because it does it automatically. I can't believe I've been living in the
dark ages for sooo long. And that's not even with KDbg installed (I *was*
a gdb person, I'm now going to give KDbg a real going over!).
In short, I'm amazed by it. A truly eye-opening experience. I've not
plumbed the depths either: the inbuilt CVS support, or help system, or any
of that sort of thing. And it's still in beta and not even version 1. ...
Every day I'm amazed by where KDE GNOME are going. I can hardly believe
they've been around for such a short time, but are already so good.
Yours evangelisingly,
Alex ;))
(Just feeling good about linux today for no apparent reason!)
