If you're not trying to start a flame, don't repeat yourself.
All distributions are inevitably out of date, at least if you
stick to the stable versions and expect them to be reliable.
Apt is only beginning to be written, and will replace dselect,
which even the diehards will admit has some serious design
flaws. The latest stable Debian (slink) has all the up-to-date
stuff in it to run 2.2 kernels; all you have to do is compile
them.
I think I can say honestly that I don't like any distribution,
and I could produce a couple of reasons for any X. I have
heard many complaints about this or that release of Red Hat
or S.u.S.E that some feature in it was irritating or badly
conceived or untested or whatever; there is some truth behind
all of these. There are also some advantages that Debian, Red
Hat, S.u.S.E, Caldera, at least, have which none of the others
of these have. Moreover, the people who are working on these
four distributions, at least, are cooperating with each other
and feeding things back into Linux in general.
