No ;). The exception is most types of WinModem: only Lucent winmodems
work, and then only badly. I believe more support is coming; it ain't here
yet. But internal ISA, PCI or external modems work fine.
Depending how you define cheap, you can pick up 56K modems from about 35
quid if you know where to look.

SuSE is very well thought of in this group, as is Mandrake (well thought
of by me, anyway ;), Debian, and, to an extent, RedHat. Depending on how
'expert' you feel with Linux, Caldera OpenLinux is also an option: this is
one of the easiest distros to install, although SuSE 6.3 seems to have
caught up with it, at least in terms of ease-of-use.
