Slow network problems

Help!

I have a speed problem with my home network.

The basic senario is that there are two machines, one Win95 with a 3com905B
card and the linux box (SuSE 2.2.13) with an NE2000 clone,

The problem is that on ftp and Samba 2.0.6 transfers the speed is awful (17
sec for a 1.2Mb file) The collision indicator on the hub (10Mb Dlink hubby)
is constantly flashing. However with VNC running I get no collisions just
constantly blinking traffic indicators.

What can I do to improve performance.

I know it should be better coz we get much better at work on a busy network
