Re: kernel sound

I don't see why not. Hardly any different from sysadminning a Windose
system then.

Paul Sims will recompile it for you at the next LUG meeting ;-)

You get a far more reliable product, once the inital configuration
issues are worked out.

Bzzt. The hardware-specific driver does not depend directly on
anything and vice versa, but order matters AFAICT. I assure you,
modprobe does not DTRT (modutils 2.3.7, kernel 2.2.10) until you have
sound correctly configured, when it works a treat. But this is not
really documented anywhere yet.

For at least two little old ladies I know, Linux was _easier_ to learn
than Windows. And they appreciated being treated as thinking adults
in at least some of the documentation. (Talk to your network
administrator, you mere users don't understand s**t is not a
compliment, even to a little old lady. Of course, they immediately
come and ask their sons because they don't know s**t, but they
appreciate not having it assumed up front.)

It doesn't, at least in Ghostscript, which AFAIK is still the heart of
the printer driver on all Linux systems. Nor does high resolution, at
least on some printers in that line. Good enough for many uses <<
good.

Depending on your buddies or kids for customer support. Just like
Windose users do.

Your basic point, Linux is not for everybody, is correct, and for the
reasons you state. But Linux can and IMHO should and will reach a far
wider audience than it currently does.
