Help what does kernel panic Mean?

Hi I rercived a free copy of SuSE LINUX 6.3
at the demo last week since im only
semicomputerlitert its probabuly understandable.i have a 486 with 20 mb ram
windows 98 and a second hard disk 503 mb empty that iwould like to run linux
on I tryed to make boot disks and ended up with a directory on my C; called
loadlin,  in itfiles, Debug.out, Linux, Linuix.par, loadlin,
Susesave.mnu, and zimage

i now also have a new linux prompt that shuts
down windows runs dos and when i try it scroles
down the screen and just when i think something is going to happen itstops
with this message: Kernel panic no init found try passing init = option
to kernel
