I won't deny you got a bad lot. but my experience, and that of
several others on Tokyo LUG, is that recent IBM drives, like
California wines, are rather reliable across the product line. Most
mfrs are like French wines, where model and serial number matter
greatly.
YMDV, sorry bout that.
