Starting Simple

Okay
here's one for everybody, the answer I am sure is so simple. I installed Suse
last night, everything went okay. Logged on as root & tried to startx, told
me I couldn't so I ran xf86config & hey presto it works. Only thing is it
has a virtual desktop i.e. the desktop is bigger than the screen. I can't seem
to find how to change it. Any ideas
