Amateur... connection

If you've got a minute, do you mind having a think

I was having printing problems, and very erratic
connection, to say the least, with kernel 2.2.14, so I re-installed 2.2.10 which
came with my distro (SuSE 6.2).  No more printing problems, and most of the
connection stuff has cleared up.  But... I've edited my '.xinitrc' file so
that 'Root' and my girlfriend use KDE, but 'harvey' uses
Enlightenment/Gnome.  Both Root and my girlfriend can connect, but when
using Gnome's pppd, I get a connection, but only to be told that the 'daemon
unexpectedly died' the moment I touch   I'm connecting
using both Root, which I know is bad practice, and 'debbie', which is annoying
and inconvenient.  I'm using Enlightenment 0.15.3, if that has anything to
do with it. I downloaded the latest release last night, do you think that would
make any difference, or is it a pppd problem?  Slightly off the beaten
track:  is it normal that if I open up an email program or Netscape,
write and then try to connect, that the connection isn't recognised?
How do you write offline?  I'm using Outlook Express to write
this...
