compiling programs

heloo again.....:-)

i've got a problem.....but you knew that already!

i'm trying to compile a program for mp3 encoding called 'ENCODER-1.02'

when compiling it returns an error saying
'/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld : cannot open crt1.o : no such file or
directory'

ok, so i'm looking for an object file. but does anyone know what it is?
where does it come from? how do i get it back?

i've tryed a few different encoders, some work but are poor quality. one
even said that the make command was either buggy or not clever enough
and that his own 'gmake' command should be used?!? is this normal
practice?
