I've been having a go at Pine and that's very good for dialup.  You 
can also use Elm.  To set up Elm........

do  "elm -z"  .  You probably don't need to do this I'm just being 
pedantic

and then "elm -f test/test.mail"   This checks for correct mailbox 
handling.  You should have lots of Elm docs on your hard drive.   

A lot of people like to use Tkmail.  It's very good.  Then there's 
Mutt.
