Isn't this backwards?  Of course, if you can get the press to show up
in force, that's better, and you should certainly try to get their
interest.  But a movement that doesn't bother to show up if the press
doesn't deserves to lose all interest from the press---they've already
shown that they don't think they have anything to say to the public.

Assault a few store managers and MSCEs, and you'll get plenty of press
interest ;-)

Or buy a big display ad.  That would impress both press and public
with your seriousness, and as long as you're careful about libel
(tough, I know, when you're talking about MSFT :) will avoid legal
repercussions.

Whatever suits your style, of course.  But if the press doesn't think
you're news, you have to create some for them.
