I'd expect the same error from both invokations. It may be
/usr/sbin/sendmail
for your distro/setup - replace and retry.
As root try....
$ ls -la /usr/spool/mqueue
$ ls -l /etc/sendmail.cf
$ ls -l /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
not sure where it is in SuSE
And a sanity check - you are actually running sendmail ???? Not Exim or
something else. Most MTA software emulates the sendmail interface (not
completely, but sufficiently to act as a simple drop in replacement).
The fact that the name of the file is sendmail does NOT mean it is
actually sendmail there!!
You could also look in your log files to see if anything there is useful -
anything with sendmail in the line.
