Star, or, better, augmented star. There should be no single failiure mode
on the network: make sure that for all computers {A,B} in your network,
there are two routes from A to B.

Wise, then, to set up a decent IP address allocation system (don't use
masquerading), administration options (linuxconf et al), priviledge
allocation, etc. Plan to have all these things connected; don't bolt them
together as an afterthought.
