Help on installing KDE on SuSE 6.3 please

Yes, I know it sounds (and probably is) mind numbingly simple but I've 
tried to install SuSE 6.3 with KDE on a couple of different systems now, 
and while SaX seems to work OK, when I try to run X for real I just get the 
grey screen. My system doesn't show any signs of wanting to display the KDE 
desktop.
I've used both the automatic and guided methods of installation and also 
YaST from the command line.
I must be doing something wrong but I can't for the life of me think what.

Any help appreciated.
