Printer setup - help please

Help! I'm struggling trying to set up to print from Linux to a windows
machine. I have been through the HOWTO's and tried to follow what they
recommend but I still don't seem to be able to get the d*****d thing to
work. Could someone please give me chapter and verse on what I should have
done - I get so mixed up with the literature's generic instructions on
'server', $FILES etc.

What I have is a network of several machines, one of which is a windows 98
box which has a Brother HL10h laser printer attached (called 'brother').
This computer is known to the network as 'gold.metals.com' on workgroup
'WORKGROUP' at 192.168.1.4
I also have a linux box running Mandrake 7 which is networked as
'brass.metals.com' at 192.168.1.2 ( I assume that any programming of this
for printer access will be similar for the other linux boxes running RH5.2)
I have tried to set up lp0 on 'brass' to be a Deskjet 4 (which Jose says the
Brother will operate as) but I think something must have gone wrong here as,
when I do this through printtool the /etc/printcap file doesn't include any
reference to smbclient and trying to print does nothing at all. When I
modified this file by hand to make the relevant line refer to smbclient as
in one of the HOWTOs I can get some response from a command line instruction
to print using 'cat filename file://gold/brother (shit, MS Lookout strikes
again - ignore the file: bit) etc. Unfortunately, this only produces an
error print out from the printer as follows:

** Error print BR-Script Mode **
Error : undefined
Offending command : #
Data : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0A 23
OA
                               : . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . # .
Stack :

I can't get any print response from any of the apps - the files just go into
the print spooler and stay there.
I am also a bit confused in that Wordperfect 8 which I have installed does
appear to support the Brother HL10h printer directly whilst Mandrake and
RedHat don't, so, if I'm using Wordperfect, what printer should this be set
up for?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as this is now driving me daft (and
I've been almost there for years!)
Thanks,

Ian
