[Sheflug] Problems with installing GTK 1.2.7

Dear all,

Well, I guess the subject of this message says it all.

It all began when I decided that it would be a really, really good idea to
install the latest non-developers version of the Gimp. The Gimp told me
I needed the latest version of GTK, and then I had to get the latest version of
GLIB, etc. etc.

I have glib 1.2.7 installed fine (I think), but I get the following error when
trying to a ./configure on gtk+-1.2.7:

checking for glib-config... /usr/local/bin/glib-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.7... yes
checking for X... no
configure: error:
*** X libraries or include files not found. Check 'config.log' for
*** more details.

And config.log says this (sorry if I've included too many lines here - better
too many than too few):

configure:4532: checking for X
configure:4599: gcc -E  conftest.c >/dev/null 2>conftest.out
configure:4595: X11/Intrinsic.h: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 4594 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include <X11/Intrinsic.h>
configure:4675: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall   conftest.c -lXt   1>&5
configure: In function `main':
configure:4671: warning: implicit declaration of function `XtMalloc'
/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lXt: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure: failed program was:
#line 4668 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"

int main() {
XtMalloc()
; return 0; }

Me, being a beginner to Linux, am pissed off and don't know what to do next.
Anyone any ideas?

Love you lots,

Jonathan.
