Do you have lsof installed? If so, try:

	lsof /dev/dsp

you'll get output like:

COMMAND   PID USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE   NODE NAME
xmms     6359 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp
xmms     6360 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp
xmms     6361 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp
xmms     6389 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp
xmms    18798 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp
xmms    18799 root   18w   CHR   14,3      272953 /dev/dsp

which tells me xmms has it open :) Multiple PID's due to xmms multi-threading.
