The unofficial explanation is that SIS sucks.  However, having said
that I have seen it working since XFree86 3.3.6 came along. My own
opinion about your 3D card is that I'd get something else and then
your monitor might work.  If all else fails find an old S3 card that
doesn't cost much and try that.  I haven't seen one fail yet.

Craig Andrews might tell you something about 3D cards ?
