Bob, you're a star.. cheers.  Exactly (well more or less) what the problem
was.  However, I got round it by turning off the system sounds within KDE as
they were already disabled within gnome (which I don't use btw).  But, as
soon as I tried to 'test' a sound mid mp3 play then there was the old
problem back.  So, as you said below.

Which prompts the question... even though this is a way round my/our
particular problem, surely there is some other more elegant fix... after all
it just isn't the same not having the splosh and whip as windows open and
close (joke).  Seriously though, if I use another app (as I intend to use
ICQJava when I sort it out) will I just come unstuck again.
