There's little advantage to 2.* for personal use that I can see, and 
if you use it for anything except a very restricted set of uses you
are liable for royalty payments, even in an educational setting.

`xmkmf' is a shell script that invokes the Imake utility, the X11
predecessor to autoconf.  If you have /usr/X11R6/bin/imake, you can just
use the old xmkmf.  Both probably live in the basic X development RPM,
whatever that's called.  (Under Debian it's xlib-dev.)
