Let me just check this, because it's not my box, it belongs to the
University, so I have to be a little more careful here.

The Box is a Mandrake machine, I forget which version, but not the
current one. What we plan to do is download the latest Mandrake distro
burn to CD and install on the new drive. So can I notwithstanding any
alarming changes in the Mandrake file layout delete the new /etc
directory and cp the old one across?

Yep I think I might take the debian plunge over the summer especially
as Richard has some CD's  :-)
