Not at all. IRDA is nothing to do with Microsoft, and is an OPEN
standard, as is GSM. See this question on the Linux-irda email list:

As regards how far you could get it, dunno. But certainly, it shouldn't be
that hard to get it to work. IRDA is actually easier than the cable
solution, and substantially more easily than PC card.
