It might sound daft, but...

I notice you are on UKLinux.net. I too have an account, not that I ever use
it. I had the same trouble as you, and it turned out to be that it was
because I was using Free-Online to dial up, and it didn't like to be sent
stuff from my UKLinux address.

UKLinux mail (pop and smtp) only seems to work if you are connected directly
to their server. There is comment to this effect on their website.

If you are already connecting directly, then this will not apply, but this
solved my problem (not using UKLinux, that is)

I wish.  I've sent a couple from two "spare" accounts: deborah.uklinux.net
& daddio.uklinux.net, but no joy - Sender domain must resolve etc.

I'll keep thinking - or my best impression of thinking...
