Did you actually do anything when you ran YaST?? The setup is exactly the
same! You have to:
1. Change the IP address of the SuSE box to 192.168.1.something (not 0)
OR
2. Change the IP address of the Debian box to 192.168.0.something (not 0)
A subnet consists of machines. Machines on the same subnet can talk to
each other. With a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the first three numbers
of an ip address denote the subnet, and the last number the machine
number.
So, 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 is machine 1 on 192.168.0
192.168.0.23/255.255.255.0 is machine 23 on 192.168.0, and can talk to the
machine above.
192.168.1.40/255.255.255.0 is machine 40 on 192.168.1, and can't talk to
either of the above machines.
I still don't see why you need the two machines on different subnets?
Also, if you want to be brave, set up DHCP and DNS. DHCP assigns an IP
address to machines that ask for one. DNS will do all the naming. If your
gateway is permanently on, you don't need to set permanent IP addresses.
Cheers,
Alex.
