Nothing's protected against root. But you have to know where to look,
not always obvious in a multi-tasking VM system.
MAC addresses are easy, though; Linux drivers print them out on load
and in ifconfig at the least; you can also get all the MACs on the
local hardware net with tools like Karpski, which put the interface
into promiscuous mode and listen for ARPs and the like.
