I can`t say I completely understand it all myself, but from what I can
see from a quick look at "man apmd", it looks like apmd works with the
BIOS module in the bios to control powering down, syncing info to disks,
logging and the like.
With a laptop it also controls shutdowns and power management, battery
charge etc.
