Debian is now distributing (in "unstable") a package called auto-apt,
which is to Debian packages as kerneld (or kmod) is to kernel modules,
ie, it loads them on demand.

Of course, you wouldn't be very happy if it chose to do so in the
middle of a firefight ;-) but I doubt very many games do dynamic .so
loading <chortle>.

Mind you, this will make it possible to catch a Windose under Linux,
so I don't recommend it (not to mention that people who worry about
dling a library probably aren't ready for Debian unstable...).

Of course, totally untested by yours truly:  my usual response to a
package that wants libs I don't have is dpkg --erase....
