[Sheflug] Riva TNT Drivers

Hello all,

further to last Saturdays discussion of Riva TNT2 boards, and my misfortune
of owning a TNT2-M64, I have a discovery:

I got the binary only XFree 3.3.5 driver from NVidia, removed X_SVGA from my
system and installed it.

It seems to have a greater number of GL extensions supported than the last
one, and is significantly faster. Also, the X_SVGA server is specifically
accelerated for these cards,

As long as I turn of High Quality Skies (which are very slow for some
reason) in Quake3, it is not just 'barely playable', a la yesterday
afternoon, but 'ultimate fragfest' (well nearly. Not quite on a par with
Sammy's SLI voodoo 2's yet ;-)

It seems that the Utah-GLX version of glx.so which comes with SuSE 6.3/4 is
a generic version with limited support for a wide range of cards. The nvidia
one is much more specific and provides a major performance boost. It also
works with all versions of the TNT chipset, including TNT, TNT2, Vanta,
Ultra, and yes, even M64!

Cheers

Craig
