yes, it is an ATAPI drive

thanks for all the suggestions--I'm hoping that at least one will work: I
may well try installing on a secondary IDE channel, then recompiling the
kernel, then moving the drive back to HPT and rebooting, especially as it
seems I should do this for a windows installation as well.
