Try "hdparm -t /dev/hda".

You should get something like:

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  4.69 seconds = 13.65 MB/sec

(You will have to do it as root)

gcc --version

2.95.2 and above are faster but "may be buggy". :)
