[Sheflug] Groovy Sounds of Mozart and Beethoven

Dear All

Anyone know what this might be about ?

I've set up sound on my notebook with SuSE 6.4 and then typed in
'soundon' to switch on the OSS sound module. It works. I get an ear
splitting screeching noise out of it just before I hit the off button.
It's very painful.

Several people think that I can get round this by turning down the
microphone settings on Kmix. Stops the feedback between the speakers
and the microphone.

However, when I try to start Kmix I get the following error
message....

"kmix: Could not open mixer.
Perhaps you have no permission to access the mixer device.
Login as root and do a 'chmod a+rw /dev/mixer*' to allow access"

I've done that several times and re-installed the rpm that is Kmix.
Still won't work. Any ides how to get round this one ?

Thanks
