Re: [Sheflug] Re: suse7.0
Thanks for the support Stephen ;o} As I have a couple of machines I only
play around with I try out most variations of linux which I can get my hands
on. So far I have to say that the easiest to install is Mandrake by a long
way, followed by RedHat 6.2 and then Caldera. SUSE has been the most
awkward, just a little worse than Storm (a debian derivative). I can see why
these latter types of linux would appeal to the geeks and programmers
amongst us - they hold the most 'mysteries' for the common man and can
absorb the most time - a quality which most IT types seem to look for in any
job as I found out to my cost during my working life. After many years of
frustration with IT equipment, myself and a colleague decided it was time to
rebel and stop employing the in-house IT services. At a stroke we cut the
time of any PC upgrade by about 3 weeks and reduced the cost by about 70%!
It didn't please the IT folks as they then had to make the rest of the jobs
stretch out further but it meant we could keep out department running at
best efficiency with a limited budget.
Now I'd better go and hide in a fireproof box!!!!

p.s. the equipment I have tried these installs on is Intel P100 based - 32
Mb Ram, 1.6Gb IDE hard drive, S3 video, ether express and Ne2000 net cards,
SB clone sound and 33.6 internal modem - mostly 'legacy' ISA cards except
for the video.
