I think the origin is actually some type of circus freak.
I think it's a stupid term, simply because it's a stereotype, and as with
all such things allows people to lump a diverse group of people as one
thing, which is somewhat ignorant. It's an invention of people who never
understand what "geeks" are about, so why accept such a crass idea? I
don't expect to be wearing a "Geek and proud of it" shirt any time soon.
It also does have more negative conotations in the UK as opposed to the
US.
