Not at all, not at all. It's a great help for communication between
VCs, for example. It's only useless if you ca^H^Hdon't use text
interfaces.
But it is the obvious problem to look at, since attempts by two
programs to use the same device usually end in tears. People who like
pointy-clicky kinds of things probably don't use text mode (I mean
VCs, actually) much, so almost surely Will's advice is correct. (But
don't just shut it off, uninstall it![1] ;-)
If you wish to use GPM, try setting the X mouse device to
/dev/gpmdata, which simply repeats the raw mouse report stream to
anybody who wants it (usually X).

[1] You probably can't, you've probably got proggys that depend on it
even though they don't use it under X.
