These things are too old to run a decent OS with memory
management and so on. However, the ELKS project might be able to help.
Minix should also work (but that's not free, AFAIK). However, you might
find installation not obvious and all sorts of nasty things creeping up.
However, you can get one of the many fine (sorry, ph1n3) terminals for
dos that did exist in those days (simtel.net), and plug a little serial
cable to a linux box (which defects the purpose of having a laptop to go
around, but could be useful in some circumstances). If you do succeed in
this, I'd like to hear how easy/hard it was. We do have a number of 286
in the lab, and it would be nice to have them as terminals to more
powerful computers using a crappy ethernet...
