[Sheflug] StarOffice 6.05 out!
Hi!
I suppose that everyone noticed that OpenOffice 6.05 (I think)
is out now (as read on /.). Since I had some time, some hard drive and a
free internet connection, I downloaded the best (the binary, not the
source. I have time, but not that much!), and installed it. To start
with, 52 megs in a tar.gz, and using some 170 megs of hard drive when
installed... groan...
Well, what can I say? It just looks marginally better than the
previous versions, it seems to launch thw wordprocessor by default and
not that weird window-in-a-window-in-a-window thing, looks like windows,
and seems to handle MicroSloth documents fine (even newer version of
Wart and stuff like that).
Speed is catastrophic, and the sheer look of it takes one to the
middle ages (why people insist in doing DTP for business letters
still escapes me). Suffice to say that if you've been bitten by latex in
the past, you won't consider downloading this dinosaur. Apparently,
though, it uses XML to save documents. And of course, you can get the
source and compile it yourself.
(and if you were thinking of doing equations, forget it, it doesn't
handle them well at all).
Anyway, just my 0.02$ :-)
