 A soft NIC? Eh?

Sammy, you do seem to be interested in the NE2000 NICs. Go with them if
you are looking for something cheap and well supported.
 I've also got a few 3Com 509 cards (erm...since this morning, it's now
about 8 or them :-) they don't go wrong either.
3Com 509's are available secondhand everywhere for about 1-3 quid
each...

These are all 10Mb/s cards. I'm not sure if you can get 10/100 Mb/s
NE2000s.

As already mentioned, hubs are a piece of standalone hardware - plug
'em in, and that's it. No "Designed for Windoze" crap.
I've got an Intel InBusiness 5 port hub that I got from dabs.com - £30
at the time.
You can probably get slightly cheaper, but I was happy to pay an extra
£5 for the Intel kit.

My room currently has two machines - one you can hear from down the
stairs. Another 3 or 4 machines are going to be added over the weekend -
I'm buying those P75's and 486's I was going on about...

...but fortunately I also have duff hearing :-)

Stick my left ear to the pillow and all I get is a soothing murmer from
the boxen.
