This is also coming perilously close to home in New Zealand, too...
arguably part of the Echelon network, our government is extremely
susceptible to pressure from a couple of bully-boys (UK and USA) over
intelligence data.  Our dear politicians (I hope they all rot in hell)
have introduced similar legislation here, under the guise of making
cracking illegal (with specific exemptions for the government's security
services... oh, and it doesn't apply to "inside" jobs either).  David
Harris (the author of Pegasus Mail)  had a few words to say about the
topic in this week's Computerworld NZ...
