I would lay a fair bet it's not the kernel nor glibc, I reckon it's
something dodgy on your system. You're not a Debian user, are you? I know
Debian has 'issues' with kernels, glibc, etc. in certain circumstances... if
you're relying on some pre-packaged version, that's probably the problem.
Get the source and compile it from scratch, if you haven't already. Not
hard. Just make sure you have a copy of ash lying around. (& running ;))
