[Sheflug] Re: Sawfish
Hello Alex and Stephen.
Thank you both for your replies to my comment about not being able to get
Sawfish to work.
This batch of postings from me started with a query about a problem I was
having with KDE1.92 which is with SuSE7. It has expanded from there and I
decided to look at alternative window managers/desktops to KDE before deciding
whether to download the latest KDE (or wait until SuSE7.1 comes out), or to
change to another.
Several were installed with SuSE, and all work. Two others have been
recommended by the group, Enlightenment and Sawfish, so I have installed these
from the SuSE disks.
Enlightenment runs with no problems. I can run it on its own, in conjunction
with Gnome and in conjunction with KDE. I can start it from the KDM Sessions
menu, from Failsafe, from Dy De and from a command line as suggested by both of
you.
However, when I try to start Sawfish by any of the above methods I either just
get a screen full of "shash" and the Xlib extension "XINERAMA" missing on
display ":0.0" error, or there is a quick flash of the error message and it
immediately goes back to KDM. Sawfish is not shown in Dy De either. It is in
the Gnome control Panel, but clicking on it freezes the computer.
The document on getting XINERAMA up and running is about ten pages long. That
is why I baulked at trying to write the configuration files for it - especially as it meant
modifying the video card settings.
Alex, you asked if I was trying to use XINERAMA more than once. I have done an
extensive search of my hard drive, and can find no trace of it, so I have come to the
conclusion that it is not installed.
Have a very good Christmas, everyone.
Keith
