[Sheflug] Device problem

Hi,

After installing Mandrake 7.2, I have been trying to persuade my
Soundblaster gold card to work with it. However, all I got was an error
message reporting that /dev/dsp couldn't be found. Thinking that this might
be due to an error in the distribution, I installed the latest 2.2.18 kernel
but this made no difference. There was a file called 'dsp' in the /dev
directory but, when I looked at it's properties, it said that it found a
file but was expecting a directory. In messing about with it I have now
somehow lost this 'dsp' entry in the /dev directory and can't find a way to
re-create it. I have tried to use MAKEDEV which consistently says it doesn't
know how to make /dev/dsp and I have read through all the HOWTOs which look
even vaguely relevant - all to no avail. The soundcard seems to be working
OK as I can 'cat <file>.au > /dev/audio' and get an output but I obviously
can't do anything with more complex sounds.

So, can anyone tell me (a) how to replace the missing /dev/dsp
(b) why the original file didn't work
(c) anything else I should know about this installation!

Thanks.

Ian
