It sounds like your system is frantically trying to route everything out
over the cable network. "ifconfig" will show the acive interfaces,
presumably the cable modem hangs off an ethernet port?

"ifconfig ippp0 down" will probably kill the cable modem interface and
should reset the routing assuming the ppp-down script runs ok. If printing
then works - don't forget lpd is fully network-enabled so do check that the
printer is set in printtool as local -
you'll have to refine what route does when the cable i/f starts up.
